The DARPA Robotics Challenge

The DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) was announced in 2012 as the currently most challenging and most competitive robotics competition for advancing humanoid robotics to assist human responce forces in recovering from disasters.

The DRC consists of three events and the final prize is 2M US$. Several GKmM Members from different GRK groups participated in or actively supported the international joint team formed by TU Darmstadt together with Virginia Tech and lead by TORC Robotics, a spin-off company of VT. On June 27, 2013, the results of the first DRC event, a virtual challenge (VRC) of response tasks for a supervised semi-autonomous humanoid robot have been announced. From original over a hundred registered teams, only 26 qualified for the VRC which our joint team finished as overall 6th.

Now our team will get funding including one of the most advanced and powerful humanoid robots, Atlas from Boston Dynamics, and will prepare this robot for participation in the second DRC event on December 21, 2013.
