ABSTRACT

Exploring the ocean often means to take risks, as assets and trained personnel go on possibly lengthy and dangerous patrol, monitoring or sampling missions. By leveraging on the wisdom built in the field of terrestrial wireless networks, underwater networks of autonomous assets can do much to relieve this effort and the related mission costs. However, the specifics of underwater communications tend to discourage a straightforward porting of networks protocols from the terrestrial to the underwater domain.

This talk will explore the differences between wireless radio and underwater acoustic communications, with a focus on those that are relevant to networking. Some protocol solutions tailored to the underwater channel will be introduced and explored, along with future research challenges.
